I consider myself a rave/ techno/house/electro connoisseur and my soul was stolen by the gods of techno when I was about 15 years old. I attended my first rave, (Monster Massive) at the LA Coliseum. Paul Van Dyke was headlining along with Paul Van Dyk, Markus Schulz, Felix Da Housecat, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and much more. This lineup sounded amazing to me even as a 15 year old especially considering the only concerts I had been to before that were Paul McCartney and the Beach Boys (twice) with my parents...Which, don't get me wrong, are very respectable and legendary bands, but if you had to choose between that or an LA Massive Rave right before your favorite holiday Halloween? So, like a conniving 15 year old girl, I stole my parents money and had my older friends drive me to buy my $60 ticket at the sketchiest store I knew, "Wicked Chamber". I made plans to go with my significantly older friends that went to community college, and told my mom I was having a sleepover and movie night at a friends house.
Monster Massive had the longest line I had ever seen... we arrived at around 7pm, an hour or two it had started. We cut the line, breezed through security, and next thing I knew- we were in! Thousands of people around me wearing the craziest outfits I had ever seen...everything from but duct taped nipples to furry knee high platform boots and neon fishnets to the largest array of tie dye shirts and random costumes. On my way in, I saw a police throw a young 20 something guy to the ground and fight his way into handcuffing the poor guy. (He was just trying to sell some drugs, you know, put food on the table.) I finally entered the Sports Arena on the second or third level and the music shot me dead on as I thrust open the door, and then quickly had to regain my balance. to which I gazed down on the thousands of people in front of one giant stage dancing and raving under the most beautiful lights and having the best night of their lives. From that moment on, my life would never be the same. Anyone that has also had their soul stolen by the gods of techno...this blog is for you.
